This prelude and fugue was born after after experiencing an instance of extreme homophobia targeted towards myself. I was left feeling especially shaken, self conscious, and embarrassed. However, that Sunday after the incident I attended one of the most beautiful church services I can recall which reminded me of my true and everlasting identity as a child of God. One of the hymns which was played was #706 from the Hymnal 1982. The ending of the last verse of this hymn reads: "...knowing well that if I loved you, you, O Lord, have loved me first." The melody of this line became the subject of my first fugue.​
